Action Alert: Update on Iran Sanctions

The United States continues to impose strict sanctions on Iran to thwart the regime’s efforts to develop nuclear capabilities. However, Iran has maintained their course and continues to increase their volume of enriched uranium and number of advanced centrifuges. To prevent a nuclear Iran, the U.S. must clearly send an indisputable message to the regime that our opposition is unceasing and we will continue holding them accountable through increased sanctions and the threat of a military option.

Recent statements by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani clearly indicates that Iran has no intention of ceasing their quest for nuclear capabilities. In his September 24th speech before the United Nations, Rouhani stated his country’s objective to continue their enrichment program, calling for international “acceptance of and respect for the implementation of the right to enrichment.” On September 26th, Rouhani reaffirmed his country’s intentions via a landmark phone call with President Obama.

President Obama has previously stated his commitment to holding the Islamic Republic accountable: “The leaders of Iran must recognize that now is the time for a diplomatic solution, because a coalition stands united in demanding that they meet their obligations. And we will do what is necessary to prevent them from getting a nuclear weapon.”

In July, the House passed the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act of 2013 (H.R. 850) with overwhelming bi-partisan support. This legislation authorizes the President to increase sanctions on Iran by banning companies from conducting business in the U.S. if it is found they have a conducted considerable trade with Iran. It also reaffirms America’s belief that the Iranian people deserve a responsive and democratic government. The 400-20 passage reiterates America’s commitment to preventing the development of Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The legislation has seen no major action in the Senate since August 1st.

It is crucial for the Senate to now pass this legislation and send the indisputable message to Iran that the United States will not sit idly by as they continue to develop their nuclear capabilities.
